Taming the Beast
I've been working on wiring for the last couple of weeks. Thankfully I have a large table in the basement to work on. I un-taped the entire harness and used those Velcro cable management wraps to keep the whole thing from exploding into a giant rats nest.
It took me about 4 days to get all the un-needed wires deleted and the harness reorganized for reinstall into the car. I spit the remaining harnesses up into well labeled manageable subsections. I will still need to rework them some to get them cleaned up.
I started with this:
and ended with this:
I haven't weighed the discarded wire yet, but I'm guessing 30 pounds. I'll be adding some of that back in switches and some fuse blocks, but not much.
I created an extensive spreadsheet that cross references my 96 to 01 wire colors that affect me and a complete table of my needed ECU connections by color and pin number and how they interface with the 96 wiring above.
My next move is to clean up the 2001 engine harness to remove the un-needed connectors and wires. Finally I will create a layout plan for the physical install.
One piece of advise if your tackling a similar job. Label the hell out of your wires. I used flag labels on everything as I stripped back. A lot of these will go in the unused pile, but if you fuck up, you'll be really thanking yourself later when you have labels.
My chassis is looking like this , stuff will be going back in soon.
